Equipment & asset finance
Finance for the vehicles, machinery and equipment your business runs on. Structured around your cash flow and the useful life of the asset.

How lenders assess equipment finance
Equipment and vehicle finance is secured by the asset itself so lenders look at both the business and what is being financed.
The asset
Its type, age, condition and resale value. New and commonly traded assets such as cars and trucks usually suit more lenders than specialised machinery.
The supplier
Purchases from a dealer usually need fewer checks than private sales, where the lender may need to verify ownership and condition.
ABN and GST history
Many lenders offer streamlined approvals for businesses that have held an ABN and GST registration for at least two years.
Deposit and balloon
A deposit or trade-in lowers the amount financed. A balloon lowers repayments but must be paid, refinanced or covered by selling the asset at the end.
Term and useful life
The term usually matches the asset’s working life and lenders limit how old an asset can be at the end of the term.
Credit history
Clean business and personal credit files keep the paperwork light. Recent defaults usually mean full financial statements are needed.

Fix these first
These are the issues that most often slow an application down, and what to do about each one.
- Choosing the asset before checking finance
Get approval in principle first so you know your limit and the documents needed before you commit.
- A balloon you can’t cover
Choose a balloon you can realistically pay or refinance when the term ends.
- Private sale paperwork missing
For a private sale, have the seller’s details, proof of ownership and any finance payout figure ready.
- Insurance not arranged
Lenders need comprehensive insurance in place before settlement so arrange a quote early.
- GST not planned for
If you are registered for GST, ask your accountant how claiming the GST on the purchase affects your cash flow.
What is a balloon payment?
A balloon is a lump sum due at the end of the term. It lowers regular repayments but must be paid or refinanced when the loan ends.
Can I finance used equipment?
Yes. Many lenders finance used assets, though age limits and terms vary.
Is equipment finance tax deductible?
Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and the type of finance. Speak with your accountant about your situation.
